What are we about?

Our young people are an important part of our church. Our aim is to help every young person on a journey of discovery, to explore and respond to God's word and to grow in his or her relationship with Jesus. This will be in the context of a safe and friendly environment and presented in a fun way, and will be relevant to their life now.

Groups

Groups are split broadly into age bands. We are flexible in applying this - for example, to sustain friendships or to split up members of the same family (if that is appropriate!!).

The groups are currently ...

  • Bubbles (Crèche):Babies and toddlers up to "rising fives".

    J Team consists of...
  • Splash! (5-8 years)
  • Xstream (8-11 years)

    Youth Groups consist of ...
  • Incredibles (11 –13 years) - click to go to the Incredibles Home Page!
  • Thirst (13 upwards) - click to go to the Thirst Home Page!.

  • Who leads the youth work?

Bubbles is co-ordinated by Julie Court. The J Team has 3 leaders - Judith Crompton, Suzanne Tun Pe (Splash!) and Su Tomes (Xstream). Julian Barker runs Incredibles, and Heidi Roberts and Neil Scott run Thirst.

    Helpers ....

... includes parents, teenagers, and grandparents for supporting sessions. In fact, anyone is welcome who likes children and is prepared to share their faith with them. They 'muck in' and help glue, stick, draw, keep order (!) and be friends with the young people.

Note: All helpers and leaders must be checked under the Criminal Records Bureau before they can help with youth work. This will be arranged for you and is completely confidential.

Where and When do we meet?

    Where ... ?

  • Bubbles (Crèche) meets in the Julian Chapel at the front left in church at any service.
  • J Team meets in the Woodhouse Gardens pavilion, next to the Post Office.
  • Incredibles meet at 27 Whitecliff Mill Street.
  • Thirst meets at Rectory at 2 Portman Place.
  • When ... ?

  • All the groups usually meet up at 10.00am in Church and then go on up to their respective venues together.
  • Bubbles and J-Team meet every Sunday except the 2nd Sunday in the month, when everyone is in for All Age Worship.
  • Incredibles and Thirst meet every Sunday except the 2nd Sunday (when it's All Age) and the 4th Sunday in the month (when we aim to give the 10.30am service a bit of a "Youth" feel to it).
  • We all meet together in church for the All Age Service on the 2nd Sunday, where children are encouraged to help with giving the books out and other 'Welcomers' duties. We occasionally help in the service, too – doing the readings, or prayers, helping with music or dramas. Children do what they feel OK with.
  • All services and sessions last about an hour, and when they are meeting elsewhere, all young people are led back to church by the end of the service.

    What do we do?

The Bubbles & J Team groups follow the Childrens Ministry programme. This uses 6 week sessions exploring various themes, which are tailored to the different age groups. For example, in Bubbles, a session about Jesus’ early life would look his childhood and what he did. Splash! might explore families , comparing Jesus’ family with their own. Xstream group would develop this story further by looking at how they could learn and grow like Jesus did. Incredibles is still more challenging to lifestyle and has strong links to young peoples' issues.

The morning activities start with a fun introduction, 'Switch On' – an attention grabbing activity like games or art work; we may have a song and talk time about the theme; then we split into groups for the Bible story and ‘Building’and ‘Back Up’–activities for learning, response and application to everyday lives. All group members are given magazines to take home.
To find out more about what they do in their sessions, please go and have a look at the Incredibles and Thirst pages !

There is no charge for Sunday morning sessions. We do, however, support the Tear Fund 'Children at Risk' programme with our weekly collections, and special activities such as coffee mornings. Any parent or carer is very welcome to talk to a leader about the material and content of any session- or come along and see for yourself! All groups do social stuff – programmes are generally produced at the beginning of term.

    What do YOU do now?

Why not select the group most appropriate for your child and bring them along? Stay if you (or your child) would prefer this. Or talk to one of the leaders, particularly if you want to help with the youth work – telephone numbers are given at the end of this leaflet. You will be asked to fill in a permission form which gives us contact details and essential health information. You can find a display of typical material at the back of the church.
