The Kopec String Quartet will be playing a concert at Blandford Forum Parish Church on Sunday 29th May as part of the Blandford Forum Parish Church Arts Festival entitled "A Sense of Awe".
The Kopec String Quartet are ...
Piotr Kopec (violin)
Piotr Kopec lives in Bournemouth. He graduated with an honours degree in performance from Trinity College of music where he studied with Diana Cummings. A member of the Alani and Petrus quartets Piotr also works with orchestras, choral societies, chamber groups and opera. He has performed at hundreds of functions and weddings and recorded for various pop artists at Xenomania Records. He regularly gives recitals and as a concerto soloist recent engagements have included the concertos by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Bruch and Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Piotr plays on a 1673 Andrea Guarneri violin, kindly on loan from Felicity Belfield to whom he is eternally grateful.
Dorothea McCabe (violin)
Dorothea was born in Germany where she started playing the violin at the age of 7. She played in various youth orchestras and studied English and History at Tübingen University. She moved to Bournemouth in 1999 and married Simon. She now teaches at a Special Needs school in Ringwood. Simon and Dorothea have two daughters, aged 2 and 4.
Simon McCabe (viola)
Simon studied languages at Royal Holloway College, London University many years ago, and currently works as a school teacher as a punishment for this. He played the violin when quite young, but then saw the light and started learning the viola when he was about ten. The last decades have seen him perform the Telemann viola concerto, Berlioz Harold in Italy (just about a viola concerto) and The Bach double viola concerto, known as the 6th Brandenburg concerto. Simon also sings baritone in recitals and as an oratorio soloist.
Kathy Jackson (cello)
Kathy's parents were both professional orchestral musicians so throughout her childhood she listened to concerts and rehearsals in the London concert halls. She started playing the cello when she was 7 learning at North London Collegiate School where she was awarded the music scholarship, then she became a pupil of Florence Hooton. Kathy continued her cello studies as part of her music degree at Exeter University with Naomi Butterworth. She moved down to Bournemouth in 1987 to work as orchestral librarian for the Bournemouth Orchestras then commuted to London everyday to work for BBC Radio 3, until her 3 children came along. Kathy then decided to retrain in IT and went along to find out about an evening class and ended up doing another degree at Bournemouth University as a (very) mature student and now works in IT in the education sector. She plays cello in chamber music groups and in local orchestras.
