World Mission - The Mission of The Church - what on earth is it for?

The Eyes on The World

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:18-20 (New International Version)

To Susanne and I, as former missionaries to Thailand, the familiar word of the 'Great Commission' come home with particular force. This is because in Asian culture the moment of departure has great significance. So too is obedience and loyalty to one's liege lord. Even if the impact of parting words is less in Western culture, and loyalty is not absolute, we have to affirm that Jesus' last words before leaving earth and ascending to his Father must carry great weight. For some of us these two words: 'World Mission' can turn us off. We are haunted by the past unintended harm done by missionaries from the West. For others, these words raise up a feeling of excitement and frustration. Excitement, because those of us who have worked as or with missionaries have witnessed God's mighty hand at work in the darkest corners of the earth. Frustration, because there appears to be a lack of interest in World Mission amongst many Christians in the West. In order to raise awareness, interest and a desire to get involved, a series of Mission Speakers will be visiting us over the year!
